About Us

Thrifty Nickel Want Ads started in 1970 as a freely distributed, single broadsheet, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Many said the idea would not work, that it could not survive. Advertising rates, significantly less than the competing daily, were too low, they said, and free distribution much too costly. They were wrong.

Today, Thrifty Nickel Want Ads and American Classifieds publish in more than 127 markets nationally, reaching millions of potential buyers each week. Each office, as an independent organization, adapts to the needs and contributes to the economy of the local community it serves. Independent offices share a national identity and a commitment to provide the greatest value in print advertising available anywhere.

Right here in San Angelo, Thrifty Nickel got its start on January 27, 1983, by Pat and Milton Houston. Pat Houston worked at the daily paper and Milton Houston worked at a local radio station. They took the plunge and became entrepreneurs. The first office was located at 1604 W. Beauregard, across from Strike It Rich, what is now MHMR. The first edition set a company record with 16 pages and printing 8,000 copies.

Things were going well, but more room was needed, so, Pat and Milton bought the current location at 15 N. Tyler in 1985, almost quadrupling the work space. Around 7 years ago, Thrifty Nickel, nationally changed its name to American Classifieds. This was to reflect the national scope of the paper. American Classifieds may be home owned, but has far reach. Some papers in the organization have since gone back to using the Thrifty Nickel name and logo, but San Angelo remains American Classifieds, although some still refer to our paper as Thrifty Nickel – and that’s okay with us. We are “American Classifieds” a publication of Thrifty Nickel Want Ads.
